Odętka wirginijska jest gęsto ulistnioną byliną o wyprostowanych pędach w zależności od odmiany osiągająca wysokość 60-90 cm. Liście mogą być zielone lub białoobrzeżone, górne siedzące, wydłużone, lancetowate, nieregularne i ostro ząbkowane, dolne na krótkich ogonkach. Kwiaty zebrane w rozgałęzione grona długości ok. 30 cm są białe lub różowe. Kwiaty rozmieszczone są w czterech rzędach wzdłuż osi kwiatostanu. Roślina kwitnie od lipca do września. Usuwanie przekwitniętych kwiatostanów przedłuża kwitnienie. Physostegia virginiana jest byliną ekspansywną, szybko rosnącą, rozrastającą się rozłogowymi pędami. W związku powyższym polecana jest na większe rabaty lub do okrywania większych powierzchni między krzewami, gdzie może swobodnie się rozrastać. Na rabatach zaleca się ją przesadzać co 2-3 lata, aby poprzez nadmierny wzrost nie zagłuszała sąsiadujących roślin. Kwiaty odętki nadają się do cięcia i przyozdabiania pomieszczeń.
