Kocimiętki należą do bylin silnie rozrastających się. Najczęściej uprawiane gatunki to Nepeta x faasseni (30-50 cm wysokości), Nepeta nervosa (zwarte kępy do 30 cm), Nepeta grandiflora (ciemnozielone liście, duże kwiaty, do 70 cm wysokości), Nepeta subsessilis (do 100 cm wysokości o wzniesionych nierozgałęzionych pędach). Rośliny o mocno rozgałęziających się pędach, pokryte są kutnerowatym owłosieniem, co nadaje im delikatny srebrzysty kolor. Kwiaty pojawiające się od maja do września są barwy fioletowej, niebieskiej, białej lub różowej, zebrane w okółki tworzą długie nibykłosy i przyciągają pszczoły i motyle.
